由于爱默生在19世纪50年代对废奴运动表现出来的兴趣、热心和公开立场,不少人以为他提倡种族平等。本文指出废除奴隶制是一回事,种族歧视则完全是另一回事。爱默生的确认为奴隶制是一种不利于社会发展的制度,的确赞成废除奴隶制,但他和他同时代的大多数白人一样,并不赞成黑人和白人在社会地位和政治地位上完全平等。在骨子里他仍然是一个白人至上主义者。
