文章将20世纪80年代以来新自由主义(neoliberalism)背景下人类学所显现的若干趋势视为经济与政府的双重构型。首先讨论了所谓"晦暗的人类学"转向,这种人类学重视社会生活的严酷因素(权力、支配、不平等以及压迫),表现为压抑与无望的主观经验。进而在"诸善的人类学"(anthropologies of the good)框架下,分析了一些或隐或显可被视为回应这一"晦暗"转向的作品。这种人类学既包括对"善的生活"(the good life)与"幸福"(happiness)的研究,也包括对伦理与道德的研究。最后分析了什么样的人类学才能被称为另一种善的人类学,即批判(critique)的、抗争(resistance)的、激进主义(activism)的人类学的新方向。
