Abstract:Theodore Dreiser is regarded as guide and pioneer of American naturalism. In his works he portrayed the American society scientifically and truthfully. He also described the insignificance and helplessness of man in face of the forces of environment and social pressure during the process of urbanization. In SISTER CARRIE, he adopted symbolism of the rocking chair so successfully that the characters were vividly portrayed and uncovered the theme of the novel clear, the happiness Carrie and Hurstwood pursuing could only be dreams in rocking chair.
